Faculty Refreshers: August 21st


Grab a Turtle Mochasippi from our new coffee kiosk in the lobby and join the library faculty for the Frazar Library’s 2nd Faculty Refresher on August 21st, 2008 in Room A. Sessions will focus on topics ranging from personal interest to library resources that support research and teaching. These workshops have a fun, casual atmosphere. Upon completion of the program, initial format and topics will be assessed using an evaluation form. 10:00 – 10:45 Gov Docs 2.0: What's new in the McNeese Government Documents Depository?

Rebecca Blakeley will discuss new initiatives and policies in the depository, as well as demonstrate howto navigate the new departmental website and use its various Web 2.0 tools to help you and your students.

11:00 – 11:45 Navigating the Louisiana Digital Library:

Pati Threatt will discuss the history of the LDL, the collections contained therein, and how to search and retrieve digital objects.

1:00 – 1:45 Your Personalized EBSCO Account:

During this session, Breanna Weston will show you how to create your personalized account to use in the EBSCO databases. You will learn how to create and manage your custom folders. You will learn how to create search alerts and journal alerts that can be sent to your email or monitored through an RSS feed reader.

2:00 – 2:45 Information Literacy: What is it? How Will It Help Your Students?

Here, Rebecca Blakeley and Jessica Hutchings will explain the facets of Information Literacy: defining the information need, locating and retrieving resources, critically evaluating resources, and using information effectively, ethically, and legally. They will also discuss the nationwide trend of integrating information literacy across the higher education curriculum and give professors ideas for promoting information literacy in their classes.

3:00 - 3:45 Computer Tips and Tricks:

Jerome Marcantel, electronic resources librarian, will show you tips and tricks for enhancing your computer and internet usage. This session will show you how to navigate the murky water of Microsoft Word 2007 and the wizardry of Mozilla Firefox.

4:00 – 4:45 Simple Book Repairs:

Josh Finnell will give a brief presentation on how to perform simple repairs on damaged books. After attending this session, participants will learn how to mend torn pages, re-attach pages of a book, and tighten loose hinges.
